10 ways to wear the little black dress
BY STYLE EDITOR, ON 8 AUG 2011 13:52 TIPS & ADVICECOMMENTS
We all know that the little black dress is a wardrobe staple. It can be dressed up or down and is a fashion fail-safe. No one knows this better than the gorgeous Jennifer Aniston who is currently promoting her new film ‘Horrible Bosses’. Both on and off the red carpet it’s the little black dress that’s proving a hit style choice for her.
We’ve put together ten ideas on how to wear your LBD to make sure you get plenty of wear out of this essential purchase. If you haven’t got one, what are you waiting for? Check out our little black dresses now.
1. Keep it simple
Team your black dress with a pair of high heels and a clutch bag – sometimes you just don’t need anything else.
2. Colour block
Take inspiration from the catwalks and rainbows and team your little black dress with mis-matched, brightly coloured accessories. We love the purple and orange combo which has been referred to as ‘porange’ by fashion magazines after Rihanna, Cheryl Cole, Jessica Alba and Kim Kardashian were all been snapped in the contrasting hues.
3. Get glam
Glitter, glitz, shimmer and sparkle will be the perfect partner for a party dress. Choose a dazzling pair of shoes, a sparkling bag and shimmering make-up for all-out glamour.
4. To a wedding
Yes you can wear black to a wedding – we love the monochrome look which is so classic and elegant. A chic cover up, wrap or stole in a paler colour along with a matching fascinator will ensure you look the part.
Throw your little black dress on with a denim jacket and sandals for the perfect lazy-summer-day ensemble. Go boho with layered necklaces and stacked bangles for effortless chic.
6. For the office
A black dress can be a working-wardrobe saviour, especially a chic shift dress. For a look that screams boardroom fashionista, simply throw on a tailored jacket and court shoes. It’s perfect for taking you from desk to dinner (or dance floor) too – just add eyeliner and some lippie and you’re ready for action.
7. Cosy up
With autumn drawing ever closer, the prospect or warmth and comfort are becoming more appealing. To complement your dress, go for opaque tights and an oversized cardigan. The cardigan can replace a coat while out and about during the milder early autumn weather or it can replace a blanket while you snuggle up on the sofa at home.
8. Inspired by vintage
Want to emulate the look of those vintage style greats? What about a vintage inspired headscarf, retro sunglasses and classic handbag. Don’t forget some red lipstick to complete the look.
9. To the races
To make your little black dress work for the races there’s just one thing you need – a fabulous hat or fascinator. Team your outfit with wedged or chunky heels if you’re going to be walking around on grass – stilettos are just asking for trouble.
10. Over trousers
Yes, this look is back! On the catwalks tunics and dresses were cropping up styled with tailored trousers. On the streets we’ve all been wearing leggings, jeggings and even skinny jeans with them so as the weather gets colder that little black frock could become even more on-trend. Layer it up ladies!
