This summer bright pops of colour are everywhere and in particular I’m seeing lots of blue and green shades ranging from bold and vibrant to subtle and sheer.

First, seen on the runway shows of Michael Kors, Versus, Stella McCartney, Fendi and Gucci, these eye-catching hues are the perfect way to make a colourful statement. The trick? Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Here’s a rundown of my faves.

Urban Decay
With the 24/7 Glide on Eyeshadow Pencils (featured left) you can shade the whole lid to make your peepers pop or use 24/7 Glide on Eyeliner Pencils (featured right) to line the top and bottom lash line. Whichever way you chose to do it, these long-lasting, creamy pencils stay colour-true all day long.

MAC 
You can always rely on MAC for providing amazing powder eyeshadows in an array of highly pigmented shades. The lightweight texture is easily blendable and buildable so you can try out a variety of densities. Mix this wonderful blue eyeshadow with one of their green shades to create a peacock effect.

DIOR
Forming part of Dior’s new Bird of Paradise Collection the Diorshow Mono Eyeshadow Palette (featured left) is a stunning piece of beauty kit that is great for adding intense colour or for creating a smouldering coloured smokey eye. For the nails the Dior Vernis Nail Lacquers (featured right) in shimmer and matte finish are great for mixing and matching or co-ordinating.

Cargo Cosmetics
I’m loving these two eyeshadows by our latest make up brand Cargo Cosmetics. Apply the lighter shades of the colour palette (featured left) to define, crease or highlight the browbone and use the brighter ones to bring gorgeous, blendable colour to your lids or as an eye liner. The single eyeshadows (featured right) have a soft and velvety formula that feels smooth and delivers a long-lasting even application. Nails Inc

The girls from Beauty Club Towers looked ultra fabulous as they strutted out to this year’s FiFi Awards last night which was hosted at ta plush London location.

Known as the Oscars of the fragrance industry, the FiFi Awards honour some of the world’s most coveted fragrance brands in 15 categories.

The evening started with a Champagne Reception held in the King George III room with music from the modern-day crooner, Matthew vanKan, where guests mingled before being ushered to the Porter Tun room for a sumptuous Dinner. The room was splendidly decorated for this glamorous event.

TV news presenter, Natasha Kaplinsky compered the evening’s ceremony, the industry’s charity Look Good…Feel Better,and guests were entertained by girl group Stooshe, who sang a selection of their hit songs.

The welcoming presentation was given by The Fragrance Foundation UK’s Chairman, Peter Norman, who commented on what a great year The Fragrance Foundation have had.

Peter gave a special mention to Linda Key, The Fragrance Foundation’s Executive Director and The Fragrance Foundation Award’s Committee for their help and hard work in making this year’s Awards a great success.

For the last few years, the Fragrance Foundation has presented a special FiFi Award for a special contribution to the industry. This year’s award went to Liz Higgins who has organized The Jasmine Awards for the last 20 years.

There were 20 award categories and the evening culminated with the announcement that Dot by Marc Jacobs had been chosen as Best New Fragrance for Women and Spicebomb from Viktor & Rolf had won the Best New Male Fragrance category.

How it works

Lengthening, controlling and adding volume is within every woman’s reach. The micro-faceted elastomer brush makes the eyes light up from within and naturally reach out toward their chosen prey. The formula
The Baby Doll Mascara formula is inspired by a high-tech molecule called graphene, a carbon crystal isolated in 2004 by two scientists who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010. A revolutionary molecule with extraordinary properties, ultra-thin, ultra-flexible and ultra-resistant, graphene captivates the whole scientific community. 2013: The Yves Saint Laurent Laboratories succeeded in developing a formula that can mimic the structure and unique properties of graphene by precisely combining 3 polymers, soft waxes and an agent that allows for maximum distribution of black pigments. For perfectly even colour. The ultra fine texture reproduces the flexibility and resistant properties of graphene. It makes it possible to lengthen and curl the lashes from roots to tips and ensure a 24-hour hold.

My Review
I’ve been lucky enough to try this wow mascara and believe me it is ‘incredible’. For me the shape of the brush is really important to the success of a mascara and I was impressed. Not too thick and not too small, the shape meant that each and every bristle was coated so that it would apply evenly, even on the tiniest of lashes. I love to create length and the blackest-of black, lightweight formula really defined the shape of my eyes and after applying just a couple of coats (by wiggling side to side and leaving to dry between coats) I got the false-lash effect I’ve been wanting. This is a must-try and I predict it will soon become an iconic ‘can’t live without’.

I was lucky enough to catch up with master perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux to talk about the John Varvatos collaboration.

Sarah Sian (Debenhams Beauty Editor): What was it like working with John Varvatos?
Rodrigo Flores-Roux (Perfumer): This ongoing collaboration with John has been the highlight of my career and I have had the pleasure of making all of his perfumes and working with him for over a decade. John is one of those people that is very, very detail orientated, very obsessed with quality and his approach is ‘I”ll know it when I see it’. So when we start a project we make a general picture of what is going to happen but then I throw ideas at him and he will be smelling different interpretations of the theme until he likes it and then that’s when we really start working. He has a great sense of humour and incisive taste so it’s really easy to work with him but at the same time as he is a perfectionist he can be hard to please.

SS: When creating the range of fragrances, where did your inspiration come from?
RFR:  It depends on each fragrance individually but in general I approached the creation of his fragrances in the same way he approaches fashion design. John is conscious of detail but he also has a tongue-in-cheek theme that he calls ‘hidden detail’, for instance an interesting seam placed somewhere, a pocket that is absolutely surprising or a coloured lining that almost becomes a conversation piece. So I try to always make his perfumes using these ‘hidden details’ that will make the perfume very surprising. John also looks out for interesting bottles that have lots of thought behind it. I look for interesting raw materials so that every single John Varvatos fragrance has either one of two completely unique or very unusual raw materials. The other way he looks at things is by searching for the ‘perfect imperfection’ or the ‘imperfect perfection’ and this can be harder to translate in perfume as you have to have a harmonious and balanced accord but also at the same time in the case of John Varvatos fragrances the balance is quite imbalanced, there’s always some interesting motif that will predominate to make the fragrance stand-out.

SS: Describe the smells of each?
RFR:  The classic John Varvatos fragrance is described in perfume lingo as a woody oriental mixed with a bouquet of spices and herbs and features an interesting Medjool Date Fruit which has never been used before in perfumery. John Varvatos Vintage is also woody but also has a little bit of lavender, oak moss, geranium and patchouli blended with elements of leather and amber. John Varvatos Artisan is clearly a citrusy fragrance but it also has beautiful woody undertones and touches of spice but in the case of Artisan the spices are on the colder, refreshing side because it has an interesting ginger note so it can be described as a citrus, woody fragrance.

SS: What type of men are they for?
RFR: They are for the cool guy. I have studied the type of guy that walks into the John Varvatos store and seen how he behaves so that I understand his clientele. So basically the fragrances are for the guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously, he’s very cool and if he wears a suit it’s not going to be stuffy. The fragrances can be taken literally or can be very dressed-up which I think is very important for the John Varvatos guy. And, if he likes one of the fragrances he is sure to like the other ones.

SS: Where did you go to find the notes?
RFR:  I would love to tell you that us perfumers fly around the world looking for notes but we mostly find the notes in the perfumery laboratory. I am a Botanist, that is my background and I always enjoy finding something that will be a little bit quirky and interesting just as I have done when I found Medjool Date, Murraya flower which can be found in Artisan and Blue Ginger. So, I usually use my Botanical knowledge to find the notes.

SS: What’s your favourite note?
RFR:  As a perfumer there’s things that your like and you dislike. I’ve been called the king of citrus and there’s no perfume that I have done that doesn’t contain citrus. Even if the fragrance doesn’t seem citrusy it will contain citrus as it is important to me in the way I construct a perfume. However, I also like darker elements like resins and leather. The scent of leather is very important to me and to a certain extent each of the John Varvatos fragrances contain a hint of leather as his fashion collections also feature suede and leather so the two complement each other.

SS: Will you be creating further fragrances for the range?
RFR:  Yes. We are still concocting things and we’re looking at a very interesting future.

Last week Chrystal Embury, the National Training Manager for skincare brand philosophy took over the Debenhams Beauty Club Facebook page to answer all your skincare questions.

Chrystal has over 20 years experience in the beauty industry, helping women to choose the correct beauty products for their needs. She is passionate about skincare and the philosophy brand, believing that the best cosmetic is great skin. She educates philosophy consultants all around the UK on philosophy product knowledge, new launches and customer service.

I caught up with Chrystal for an exclusive interview where she revelas her secrets to achieving great looking skin at all ages.

Sarah Sian (Debenhams Beauty Editor): Can you describe the perfect skincare routine for women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s +?

Chrystal Embury (National Training Manager, philosophy): It very much depends on a woman’s concerns, her skin condition and what she would like to improve about her skin. But, for all ages I would always recommend a good cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising routine as the first step to great looking skin and a good eye cream at any of the above ages. As we get older cell renewal slows down, so adding a retinoid will help to increase cell turn over as we start to age.

SS: What products do you recommend for tackling the following skincare problems?

- Loss of firmness

- Dark circles

- Fine lines & wrinkles

- Dark spots and discolouration

EM: For loss of firmness I recommend using philosophy’s full of promise cream and the a.m./p.m. serum. SS: What tips do you have for people with sensitive skin?

EM: Treat the skin very gently, usually the lipid barrier is broken down and needs to be re built. Try keep the peace serum & moisturiser both have ingredients to soothe, calm and take down redness. For a once a week treat use keep the peace mask.

Our Menswear Editor, Mark Applin gives his review on the SOS Survival Cream, Time Defence Eye Reviver and Men’s Post Shave Recovery Mask by Elemis. Here’s what he has to say…

Whether we like to admit it or not, men are concerned about their skin, its condition and the best way to keep in tip-top form.

So I jumped at the chance to test the Time For Men range from Elemis.

I was given the Men’s SOS Survival Cream, Time Defence Eye Reviver and the Men’s Post Shave Recovery Mask.

The Survival Cream is formulated as a high performance, daily skin moisturiser to deal with sensitivity, irritation, dryness and blemishes.

As much as I loathe to admit it, this fits me to a tee.

The formula of marine extracts, Lavender and Myrrh set about soothing my problem areas, which are just below the eyes, and left my skin hydrated, comfortable and smelling rather lovely. I used it every day before work. Then before and after my own training runs outdoors.

I really noticed the difference, especially on days when I forgot to apply it in the morning.

The Time Defence Eye Reviver was the product I was most interested in. It’s an anti-ageing men’s eye cream which is proven to reduce the depth of wrinkles by up to 37 per cent.

Now, I can’t calculate whether it did this or not. What I do know is that the wrinkles under my eyes were noticeable reduced and my eyes looked ‘fresher’ too – a point that several work colleagues and friends made.

The final product I tried was the impressive Men’s Post Shave Recovery Mask. In short, this Elemis mask is excellent. It decongests the skin by drawing out grime and impurities – and underneath my beard I have plenty. Fast-absorbing Macadamia oil moisturises the skin while Lavender and Rosemary help accelerate the repair of blemishes, shaving nicks and burns.

Using this was a very refreshing process. It calmed my skin after shaving and I noticed it took less time to get back to ‘looking’ normal.

I will certainly be going back to these Elemis products. Friends and colleagues have already enquired about where they can get some after hearing my thoughts.

It’s a quality product which produces the results it promises. That’s all we want.

Top tips:

-       Follow the instructions. If it says use a tiny amount, then do so. I didn’t think a small amount of the post shave recovery mask was enough. It was and I wasted two days worth of product.

-       Add 20 minutes to you morning and evening bathroom routine. If you want positive results, then give yourself the time to apply the products correctly. There’s no room for cutting corners.

-       Using the SOS Survival Cream every morning and every night will give you the best results.  I noticed smoother skin with less irritation after only a few days.

-       The Time Defence Eye Reviver needs to be respected. Don’t use too much but use as directed. I noticed lighter lines beneath my eyes and they appeared less tired to my colleagues.

I caught up with Head Make up Artist, Jamie Coombes (pictured above) who talked to me about the new collection of lipglosses.

For a quick and easy veil of perfection, apply Nude foundation with a foundation brush to the centre of the face working it outwards. Apply Nude concealer around the eye area and the lid with an eye shadow brush as this will absorb any excess oils resulting in longer wearing eye makeup.

Follow on from this with a mono colour of your choice, depending on your day or night look.

Use the Dior art pen along the lash line, lash maximiser from the root to tip of the lashes followed by New Look mascara in black. A little touch of highlighter in the inside corner of the eye will add a touch of light. Brush your brows into shape and shade in if needed.

Complexion is then enhanced with a touch of Rosy Glow blusher on the apple of the cheek. Skinflash can be applied to the bridge of the nose and top of the cheek, bow of the lip and chin and lightly pat this in with your ring finger.
