Anna Karenina: A Russian Style Revolution

Anna Karenina opens in cinemas today and, while Keira Knightley and Jude Law are each as beautiful as ever, we’ve been mesmerised by the super stylish trailer we’ve already seen on screen.
While the famous novel is set in 1870′s Russia, the modern-day film adaptation is centre stage – literally – with the majority of the action filmed in a theatre. Described by some reviewers as “a marvel in modern filmmaking”, Debenhams would describe Anna Karenina as ‘a modern marvel in fashion’. Victorian style with a hint of a 1950′s edge, the costumes are as stunning as Ms Knightley’s performance.
Surprisingly easy to emulate away from both stage and screen, the style of Anna Karenina can be found in the wings at Debenhams. It may not be an obvious trend but, perhaps precisely because it’s not, it will certainly help you stand out from the crowd.

For those who haven’t read the book – don’t worry, we won’t spoil the ending for you in case you’re planning to see the film – Anna Karenina is, in one word, dark. Luckily for us, black is always back – it never really goes away. Classically elegant, a black maxi dress from our Debut range (preferably one with a nod to Victorian-remiscent lace) is a sure-fire cert for Anna Karenina glamour. The longer, fuller and more fabulous – the better.
A huge trend for this autumn/winter season, jacquard sets a luxurious tone. The Rocha. John Rocha collection contains a jacquard style coat that is heading straight onto our wish list. Anna Karenina has clearly inspired at Coast too, with a ruffle-necked cream blouse on offer to add frills and thrills to any outfit.
With creamy tones and black lace both influential additions to any Victorian-esque look – a little of each goes a long way – the cream and black lace Principles by Ben de Lisi courts are not to be missed. Add a No. 1 by Jenny Packham cape, with embellished trim, or sparkling choker and an evening purse to a simple black dress for have instant AK glamour. A wealthy woman, the film’s leading lady owns a jewel or two – find more of your own in the latest collection by Jon Richard.
Finally, the piece de resistance to this style… is a pair of gloves. A simple accessory for the autumn/winter season, when it comes to ‘working’ gloves here, remember to never remove them. For Victorian/Anna Karenina style, the gloves are not just an accessory, but the essential, making you dramatic, beautiful and quite unforgettable.
Just like Anna Karenina itself.
