Ask the expert: Mother of the bride

Cassie our style advisor is answering some of the questions we’ve had from mothers of brides-to-be. What does a mum wear to look and feel fabulous on the big day?

Q. I wonder if you could help me decide what I can wear for my daughter’s wedding next September. I am 49 years old and I am a size 18-20 in clothes and 5ft 2. I usually wear trousers as they are more comfy. Janette

Cassie says…

Hi Janette, I bet you are busy helping plan everything for the wedding.

If you’re a trousers girl then a fabulous trouser suit will be perfect but don’t feel like you have to wear one colour top-to-toe. Try colour blocking too by mixing suit trousers with a different suit jacket. We love the bold lime colour of the jacket below. As you are 5ft 2 you’ll love our petites ranges, there’s loads to choose from especially in formalwear. A shorter style of jacket buttoned at the waist is a great option for your figure.

You can opt for a hat, but these days a striking fascinator does the trick too and there are loads of different styles to choose from. To look really well put-together think about how to match your accessories in with the rest of your look. A matching shoe and bag isn’t essential for everyday but at a formal occasion like a wedding it’s an ideal finishing touch.

Finish your look with some beautiful jewellery and some classic nail varnish and you’ll look fabulous. I hope you have a lovely day!

Q. Both my daughters are getting married this summer and I’m at a loss at what to wear? I am 48, size 12 and 5ft 6 tall with long blonde hair. Both are civil ceremonies. The first daughter is having bridesmaids in orange and the theme is summer and the second is having seven bridesmaids in bright yellow and the theme is daisies. Please help! Carol

Wow, I love the choice of summery colours. For a summer theme floral prints immediately spring to mind for me  so why not choose a fab floral print dress. Orange goes great with gold so pick out some accessories with that colouring to finish off your outfit.

For the daisy themed wedding a yellow dress with white accessories is sure to fit the theme without it feeling OTT. By choosing white accessories you’ll be able to take your pick from the bridal ranges too for some really special shoes and a beautiful bag. If bright colours aren’t your thing then try a more neutral coloured dress with brighter accessories.

Congratulations to both your daughters!

    Great tips in this article!
Do you think it’s important that a mother of the bride wear some type of feature accessory on her head?

Many people wear hair accessories but it’s not essential. What’s better is working out what suits you. It might be that a hat works for you, or some statement jewellery might be better.
