The beauty editors from our favourite magazines reveal the products they’re taking on holiday, and how they survive the flight to land looking gorgeous…

Stephanie Maylor, Beauty Director, Woman:

Whether you’re lounging in first class (we wish!) or fighting for the armrest in economy, the same thing is happening to your skin 30,000 feet up in the air. The humidity level on a plane is about half of what our skin is comfortable with, which means a dry, flaky face. Think less Snakes on a Plane, more ‘snake skin on a plane’!

First, drink as much water as you can pre and mid-flight (book the aisle seat for toilet access). As soon as I board, I cleanse with Burt’s Bees White Tea Facial Cleansing Wipes to freshen up, and then pat on a few drops of Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, which contains essential fatty acids to boost moisture. I’m a travel mini obsessive so this summer I’ll be packing Elemis Luxury Travel Essentials in my hand luggage. Just before landing, I’ll give myself a quick hand and arm massage with the Frangipani Monoi Body Oil (it smells amazing!) and apply another layer of moisturiser so my skin is ready for the airport air-con.

Fiona Embleton, Senior Beauty Editor, Marie Claire:

At 30,000 feet, humidity in an aircraft cabin drops to about 12 per cent – drier than most deserts. So my on-board mantra is ‘hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!’ I love Elemis face and body moisturisers so the Luxury Travel Essentials For Her kit – which contains the cult Pro-Collagen Marine Cream and Frangipani Monoi Body Oil – is a must for me.

Because I’m focusing on my skincare regime, make-up takes a backseat until I land. A swipe of Benefit They’re Real Mini Mascara and a swish of Hoola Bronzer on the high points of my face – forehead, cheekbones and bridge of the nose – and I look wide awake and holiday-ready.

Fiona McKim, Beauty Editor, Woman & Home:

You’ve had a pedi, dropped the dog off with your mum and your summer holiday’s so close you can taste the sangria, but what beauty kit will help you beat the heat? There’s no need to upgrade everything (unless you want to): just add Make Up Forever Mist & Fix Travel Size Setting Spray, a tiny but mighty mist that gives normal make-up sweat-proof superpowers and feels comfy and hydrating.

If you like a swim, Buxom Lash Waterproof Mascara looks natural enough for the beach and proved its trustworthiness to me recently during an inelegant dive off a boat into The Med. I won’t suggest a mask while you’re away (you’ll be having too much fun, surely?) but back home, treat parched skin with Ole Henriksen Power Bright, a button-cute Vitamin C treatment trio that brightens, smooths and fades pigmentation.

Madeleine Spencer, Beauty Editor, InStyle:

Though all the sun, sea and sangrias on holiday may make you feel super relaxed, the combination of a bit of extra alcohol and a lot of environmental stress really take their toll on skin, so pack a product that’s soothing and hydrating to apply when you get in from the pool and are about to head on your night out. Too Faced Hangover Primer is ideal.

Another good tip when getting ready to hit the town when abroad is to ditch powdery formulas and embrace a tint or wash of colour instead – it’ll last longer and look far better on slightly-parched skin. Benefit Cha Cha Tint is the perfect peachy shade to light up skin. Try using a dab on cheeks, on eyelids and on lips, for a summery, easy make-up look.

Lydia Thompson, Beauty Editor, Look:

When we jet off to sunny locations bronzed holiday skin is something most of us hope for, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Whether it’s the weather, or we just don’t catch the sun as well as others, our trusty beauty buddy, bronzer, sometimes has to step in. And I can’t live without Benefit Hoola Bronzer! It’s a gorgeous natural and matte colour, which mimics the shade your skin would change to after being in the sun. It now comes in two shades, meaning anyone can cheat a tan without stepping near the sun.

I love Benefit’s gift sets as they have mini versions of all your favourites, which makes travelling light easy peasy. The Do The Hoola Beyond Bronze set has all you need to cheat a gorgeous holiday glow. Plus it contains a mini They’re Real Mascara, which is insanely good.
