The much anticipated film ‘Coco Before Chanel’ will hit cinemas from 31 July and, being a dedicated follower of fashion, I will be first in the queue to see it. Coco’s words and ideas have influenced generations of designers not to mention real women everywhere who aspire to look as glamourous as she did. The film stars the gorgeous Audrey Tautou as Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and follows her life from rather obscure beginnings to the heights of the fashion world.
A muted colour palette was a strong feature for the early Chanel wardrobe and it remains a classic combination that can work for all ages and figures. The iconic monochrome styling is also recognisably ‘Chanel’ but simple, elegant garments with a masculine influence were what the brand was really known for. The famous Chanel jacket was designed with comfort in mind, a fact that was in stark contrast to the restrictive corsetry of those who went before her. Here are some key pieces to consider if you want to emulate that chic Parisian style that will never go out of fashion…
The ultimate accessory for lady-like chic and there is plenty of stylish costume jewellery around to choose from. Opt for knotted long strands or chunky statement necklaces to add glamour to any outfit.
Little black dress:
Forget the mini and the maxi, this autumn it is all about the midi and nothing says style like a figure-fixing, little black dress. It can be dressed up with heels for a night on the tiles or dressed down with pumps for a day of shopping.
Tuck yours into your pencil skirt or trousers for a work look that will wow! Ruffles or frills add interest and little details like pearl effect or sparkle buttons will make the look even more luxurious.
Wide leg trousers:
Chanel championed trousers as a key staple of the modern woman’s wardrobe. Although trousers had a clear masculine influence, the garment was worn with a care-free confidence that oozed sex appeal.
Choose a jacket designed to sit just above the hips as this style can be a super flattering wardrobe essential. The versatile piece can be worn as a skirt suit, with smart trousers or jeans, or over a dress for evening elegance.
Of course, no woman would be complete without a signature fragrance. For timeless sophistication go for Chanel No 5 perfume or choose my personal favourite Coco Mademoiselle for a modern take on the traditional.
Chanel decided that lipstick should not just be reserved for the rich and famous Hollywood elite and what a good job too. Every woman should have her favourite feel-good hue close to hand.
