The Designer Trend: Checks

Checks

With our TV ad now showing on a small screen near you, we’re taking the time to reveal the trends to turn to for new season style – inspired by our unrivalled collection of Designers at Debenhams. First up it’s Ben de Lisi, encouraging us to look chic in his collection of checks…

From country-style tweed to bold city-perfect prints, our wide selection of checks will reveal a design, or two, that perfectly fit your individual style.

Complete the Look

How to wear it? What to wear it with? Is less more? Sometimes, without our very own catwalk-trained stylist to hand, trends can be tricky. But, when you decide to follow a particular fashion, a little style inspiration is all you need to ensure you head in the right direction…

Look 1
The Fashionista look can be a difficult one, for the balance needs to be struck between looking fashionable, but not like a fashion victim. In the case of checks we recommend opting for this sleek and chic Betty Jackson.Black shirt. The high neck collar makes the classic shirt design distinctly modern, while the print is a discreet nod to checks, allowing you to opt for other statement pieces when completing your look.

To complement this checked shirt we suggest teaming with these gorgeous faux leather trousers – these even add a discreet element of punk into the look, also on trend for autumn/winter. Shoe boots are still strong for the colder months – a thoroughly modern design that looks set to become a classic – and we love this grey stiletto pair from J by Jasper Conran. The Fashionista isn’t the type to do ‘matchy matchy’, which creates a dilemma when choosing a handbag for this look; too different to the shoes and the look will be ‘OTT’, opt for plain grey and it will simply be too plain. This tweed tote is the perfect compromise. Same colour, different pattern.

Complete the look with a bit of bling – this style of shirt looks fabulous with a statement necklace setting off the high collar, while this bold black ring ring will look great against the leather.

So far, so good, but if autumn/winter outfits need anything, it’s a gorgeous coat. At Debenhams we have some stunning styles in our unrivalled collections this year, but one of our ‘look at me’ favourites simply has to be this hot pink, eighties-inspired number from Jonathan Saunders/EDITION.

Look 2

The Working Girl must always look chic and classic – fast fashion isn’t a focus for her, but she wants to look good. The winter berry works well here as it’s a sophisticated colour that’s great for making a subtly stylish impression. We love the plum roll-neck flared dress from Principles by Ben de Lisi.

Outdoor attire is also important for the office look. After all, you could always bump into the boss as you walk through the revolving doors. Team the Ben de Lisi coat with a checked flared winter coat from J by Jasper Conran - a trendy twist to the morning commute.

For accessories select an oversized tote bag and team with chunky bangles, a sparkling pendant and sleek high heels for a look that means business.

Checks may appear to be a tricky style to work into a glamorous evening wear outfit, yet this is why statement coats really come into their own. This bold black and white check design from Star by Julien Macdonald is a beautifully smart option – and perfect length – to set off a sparkly prom dress.
