This week at Debenhams, one of our favourite womenswear and homeware designers, Matthew Williamson, popped into our office for a Facebook takeover.
Here’s a peek of what everyone wanted to know…
FB: Do you feel that by designing for Debenhams you are allowing those of us without the couture budget to experience couture style clothing?
Matthew: I think great design can happen at all different price points. I have had a long term relationship with Debenhams and love designing for their customer as well as for my own brand.
FB: Who is your favourite celebrity to dress?
Matthew: There are so many great women I have dressed over the years it is hard to pick just one although if you pushed me I would say Sienna Miller as she has become a very close friend.
FB: What route did you take to become a fashion designer?
Matthew: In short, I would say you first need a very clear and unique vision which you whole-heartedly believe in. Once you have that hopefully others will appreciate it and things will start to fall into place.
FB: Do you have a favourite piece of clothing that you have designed? If so, what is it?
Matthew: After 15 years of making clothes it’s almost impossible to pick one. I usually tend to like my latest collection the most. In the spring summer collection there are some really special evening gowns.
FB: How do you feel about bloggers having so much influence. Do you think it’s a good thing?
Matthew: I think there are some really talented and creative individuals who now, thanks to the developments of the digital world, can freely express who they are, what they think and what they like.
FB: What 3 must-have items would you recommend for this autumn/winter?
Matthew: A show stopping embellished clutch bag, a tuxedo dinner jacket in satin or velvet and a great faux fur jacket.
FB: What are your top three colours for the A/W wardrobe of 2012?
Matthew: At the moment I love mixing three tones of the same colour in one outfit such as cranberry, plum and ruby red.
FB: What inspires you?
Matthew: Everyday life, particularly living in London it’s hard not to find inspiration on every turn. Usually I look to get elements from nature and certain cultures and countries for example.
FB: What’s your top trend for this season?
Matthew: To invest in a great pair of brocade trousers (cigarette pants) as an alternative to a dress for an evening look.
FB: If you are curvy and in your 40s what shape jeans work best?
Matthew: You could go for a straight cut pant to balance the lower part of the body, try my range of jeans available in store.
