Skinny jean devotee? You may want to look away now because the time has come to say so long to your skinnies and embrace the key trouser shape of the season: flares.
Spotted all over the SS15 runways in all sorts of guises, flares took centre stage as designers embarked on a nostalgic trip back to the 70s. Inspired by the decade’s stylish icons – from Joni Michell to Pattie Boyd – a haute hippie vibe ruled supreme, putting the seventies silhouette straight to the top of our fashion agenda.
While we understand it’ll be difficult to tear yourselves away from your beloved skinny jean, we’re here to remind you how wearable the flare shape really is with three different ways to wear them.
All in the Jeans
The easiest way to tap into the trend? Well, jeans of course. For the office, dress up your denim flares with a sharp, tailored blazer, but for a cool festival vibe with a seventies vintage appeal pair with an off-the-shoulder gypsy top and long statement necklace. Complete the look with strappy block-heeled sandals for a magical slimming effect and amazing elongated legs.

If you’re looking to create an elegant ensemble, make the white flared trouser the foundation to your look. Be inspired by Miranda Kerr and pair with the other key piece of the season – the denim shirt – for instant style points, or for a nautical inspired aesthetic, team with a striped tee. Keep accessories minimal for maximum impact; statement sunnies and a chic handbag will help create that off-duty model look. Alternatively, channel Amal Alamuddin’s wedding wardrobe by opting for a head-to-toe monochrome outfit that screams sophistication – a perfect look for those special occasions in the diary.

Feeling a little more adventurous? Go all out with a pair of head-turning printed trousers with a wide-leg silhouette. Adored by street style photographers, this look has been spotted at all four fashion weeks, and is also a festival favourite – as highlighted by Kendall Jenner at Coachella. Pair with a plain coloured top – we love this black gypsy number – to let your bell bottoms do the talking, and finish with ‘70s inspired accessories such as an on-trend fringed bag, bangles and gold hoop earrings.

If that hasn’t convinced you to get kicking in a pair of flares, we don’t know what will.
