This month at Debenhams we’re all about raising money for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer: a month long initiative that seeks to raise awareness (and all important funds) for the fight against breast cancer.

From bake sales in head office to stylish collections for your fashion loving selves, we’re getting involved in FTBC in a big way. A fabulous cause that provides us with an excuse to shop – what’s not to love?

Well, if you’re this editor, quite a bit actually. This year, in an extra effort to raise funds, I’ll be running the Virgin London Marathon: on behalf of Debenhams, for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Half excited/half scared, the one thing pushing me forth right now is the gorgeous sportswear we currently have in stock. Yes, ok, the regular exercise and healthy diet are the most important part of my training but, trust me, the running part is so much more appealing when you have a chic wardrobe to match.

‘Get the Look’ to Get Fit

Luckily for me, one of our fabulous sportswear brands, Reebok, were on hand to offer some expert advice for kitting out my marathon-ready wardrobe. From fitness tights (think less hosiery, more much-needed support) to colourful tank tops and wind jackets that help against the elements and offer high-visibility, the range at Reebok offers it all – and that’s before mentioning the many mix-and-match styling options.

A few of my personal favourites are pictured below – see what I mean about the colours? Practical on dark nights, cooling in the daytime sun, there’s also a handy cardholder sewn into the capri trousers, ideal for storing your travel and bank cards. We’re not encouraging you to give up half way through and take the bus, but you never know what can happen/what you might need when you’re miles away from home. Me? I found it came in handy once when I hit ‘the wall’ at 10 miles, and fully credit the purchased mars bar and smoothie with helping me complete a further 10. I also credit the Reebok range with motivating me in the beginning. When you look forward to slipping into your new workout gear, you know you’re on the right track.

Also in my workout wardrobe are a few pieces from the new sportswear range from Lispy. Lipsy Sport is a fabulous option for those who love exercise and fashion in equal measure. Each piece has been made to support and streamline the physique, providing comfort and ease of movement thanks to performance enhancing fabrics – on top of this, eye-catching prints and metallic slogans enhance the style element.

And if it’s what’s underneath that counts, then I welcome the support (no pun intended) of the team at Shock Absorber, who kindly suggested I opt for the Ultimate Run Bra. Makes sense. Features and benefits include a soft, seam-free inner lining for extreme comfort, reflective tape across cups for high visibility when running out doors, wide, padded, non-slip straps, a soft, non-rub hook & eye, plus various moisture-wicking, high performance fabrics with an innovative dry action system. After running for mile after mile, you begin to realise why all the above is so useful, trust me. Also, here’s a top tip for putting on the Run bra: clip the top clip first and then pull over your head. This will help you reach the back hook and eye more easily. Believe me, this I also trust me on, from personal experience.

As for what to take those all-important steps in, I personally discovered (the hard way) how vital it is to work out in the correct footwear. Asics do a fantastic line in running shoes, with gel pads built into the soles to help cushion the feet, as do ReebokAdidas and Nike. I met with the team at Asics and tested their method for ‘gait analysis’; this involves your feet being videoed while you run on a treadmill. The footage is then analysed in order to assess your personal running style, helping the team to give out footwear recommendations that are personally tailored to you. It’s a bit like a prescription: simply take it away and run off to shop.

Hey, if you invest in all the above you’ll be ready for anything. Even 26.2 miles.
