We sit down with our Savile Row established Designer at Debenhams, Patrick Grant, to find out all about his new watch collection.
We were delighted to recently reveal the new Hammond & Co. by Patrick Grant watch collection. The 25 piece collection takes inspiration from opulent vintage and heritage military watches of the mid-20th century and the end result is a luxurious range of watches with instantly recognisable value that only comes from well regarded, well-loved historical heirloom timepieces. Answering an array of exciting questions, Patrick spills all the details on the new collection:
You have a popular clothing collection at Debenhams, so why watches?
Menswear is all about the detail; shoe, pocket handkerchief, hat, watch. A good outfit needs to have all the elements just right.
What was the inspiration behind your new watch collection?
We trawled the history of great watch shapes and styles; photographs from old catalogues, the watches on the wrists of great stylists of the past and pieces from my own archive.
Who do you imagine wearing your watches?
I think they work for any man with an interest in style over fashion, and men who recognise quality in workmanship and materials. I hope they’ll have a very broad appeal.
What should men wear with your watches?
The collection very specifically covers everything from very formal, classic timepieces to sports and military inspired pieces to be worn with the more casual end of the Hammond and Co. clothing collection.
Watches can be very sentimental – what makes yours so special?
Like everything in the Hammond & Co. collection, they’re made in the best materials because we want them to last.
Many people wear the same watch every day so it’s a big decision, do you have any tips on buying the perfect watch?
Most men develop their own clear style; they start to learn what works well for them and develop a sort of uniform. Buy the watch that works best with the uniform of your daily life.
What’s the most important part of a man’s outfit?
No one bit should be more or less important than any other; the outfit is about the whole package from sock to hat and everything in between.
Which piece of clothing could you not live without?
E.Tautz field trousers. I wear them most days.
What’s your favourite menswear trend for the AW15 season?
I’m a big fan of the Nordic knit. It was a big part of my collection at London Collections Men, and a key feature in the collection my Hammond & Co. collection at Debenhams.
Describe your style in three words?
Simple, working, uniform.
Would you say you have a uniform or outfit rules you always follow?
Yes, any man interested in style does. I wear E.Tautz field trousers and blue crew necks, or a simple dark suit, pale shirt and dark navy tie. That’s pretty much it.
