Wallflowers beware, the guests at last night’s Met Gala proved that the only way to make an impression is to dare to bare and steal the show in lavish, avant-garde designs.

The models, celebrities and actresses in attendance made it clear that more is better; from head-to-toe embellished gowns to appliqued bustiers, the red carpet ensembles were more extravagant than ever. The only way the stars struck the ‘less is more’ approach was with racy cutaways, sheer fabrics and barely there designs.

A dress code always starts a few trends worth watching but when the dress code is set by Anna Wintour – this year was Chinese themed- the trends are guaranteed to be the most fashion pioneering. From scarlet red to skintight glittered gowns, here’s the top trends straight from the red carpet.

Embellished Extravaganza

They say three’s a trend and when Kim Kardashian, J-Lo and Beyonce wear it, it’s the most glamorous, envy enducing trend too. What lacked in fabric was made up for in embellishment, as sheer designs were beaded, encrusted with jewels and hemmed with feathers. The sparkling look was also sported by little sister Kendall and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, proving that flashing some skin and shining bright is a fail-safe combination.

Good as Gold

The iridescent theme was highly popular on the night and the look that most caught our eye was the dazzling gold gowns. Form-fitting silhouettes displayed the honed figures of the likes of Kate Hudson and Jessica Chastain; while metallic finishes gilded the simple shapes to ensure they were worth their weight in gold.

Red Hot

Many guests opted for a subtle way to fit the Chinese theme by dressing in red. The colour is symbolic for fire, joy and good fortune in China and we can’t disagree, as the ladies in red looked smoking hot. Bold red gowns were chosen by Amal Clooney, Gigi Hadid and Poppy Delevingne, with applique and layers of tulle adding interest to the red hot looks.
