For summer, designers love taking inspiration from nature and while some designers opted for an under the sea, jellyfish vibe, the collections we loved were inspired by animals above water- in the sky specifically. Birds of paradise and tropical prints transported us to faraway lands and now, as our new arrivals hit stores, the fantasy has become reality.

On the Catwalk

On the SS15 catwalk, designers referenced exotic lands inspired by recent getaways; Matthew Williamson’s enlarged floral prints and feather trimmed dresses were the product of a trip to Bali, while Erdem took us deep into the jungle with layers of dark leaves embroidered onto precisely cut gowns. A mix of materials, textures and three-dimensional components emphasised the reference to the wilderness. Ultimately, the classic gowns embroidered with riotous detail showed the clothes to be wearing this summer are both lavish and sophisticated.

How to Wear It

Up the ante of your usual holiday wardrobe with oversized tropical prints and exotic textures. Opt for hues of turquoise and teal with shots of pink and orange for a modern feel. To ensure the look stays grown-up, choose black accessories or a print with a dark background, and don’t forget to add feathers for high-octane evening glamour. Keep jewellery minimal- just one statement coloured piece is all you need and if you want to add a little make-up, make sure it’s pale pink eye shadow and a rosy tint on your cheeks.
