In the trend-driven, often fickle world of fashion, there are only a handful of accessories that have truly stood the test of time, and one of these is, without a doubt, pearls.
Despite often being regarded as the reserve of your grandma’s jewellery box, it’s time to dash away any thoughts of them being old-fashioned, as this season’s pearls have been given a modern day makeover, reclaiming their throne as the accessory de rigueur once more.
On the Catwalk
In dedication to Lanvin’s founding designer, Jeanne, who was rarely seen without her three tiered pearl necklace, Lanvin had some fun with the traditional white pearl, suspending them from necklaces and bracelets to give them a modernist Art Deco feel. Chanel’s models were draped in layered pearled necklaces while Dolce & Gabbana used the gem as a beautiful finishing touch to their extravagant regal earrings.
A favourite amongst fashion’s greats from Grace Kelly to Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn (throwback to that iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s scene), the pearl has a unique timeless appeal that cannot be matched. It’s no surprise then that the film stars of today can’t get enough either, often accessorising their red carpet gowns with a string of pearls. While some such as Kate Middleton choose to play it safe with a classic pearl necklace or earrings, others such as Rihanna have given the pearl a contemporary twist, showing there’s endless ways to wear this jewellery stalwart. More recently, Jennifer Lawrence caused quite a stir in the fashion media, by teaming an everyday ensemble of tank top and skinny jeans with a long pearl necklace, proving the pearl can look young and fresh, and should not be confined to after-dark hours.
On the Street
