They say that trends come and go, but great style lasts an eternity. If this is true, perhaps that’s why the leading ladies of Alfred Hitchcock films, such as The Birds, North by North West and Rear Window, remain icons on screen… forever mirrored in our wardrobes.
Back in his day – circa 1930-60 – ‘Hitchcock’s blondes’ (as his leading ladies were known) became synonymous with great style, class and sophistication. A major player in Hollywood, Hitchcock remains a point of intrigue even today with Anthony Hopkins, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Biel currently filming a biopic of the director’s life, detailing production of hit thriller Psycho.
With this in mind we’re feeling all inspired when it comes to hot Hitchcock style, glancing over the new season collections at Debenhams to see what we can find to transform us into a screen goddess. As it happens, there’s rather a lot to choose from, with a range of designs to leave us Spellbound.
During the autumn/winter season, a key piece for echoing the style of Hitchcock glamour simply has to be a winter coat. A classic mac, as seen at Preen for Edition, evokes effortless chic in any girl-about-town, while for days when a distinct chill is lingering in the air, oversized knitted coats offer a statement style that remains classic.
The chunky winter coat is an excellent example of bygone trends updated for the modern era. Hitchcock films span many a decade, yet it is the late 50′s and 60′s when these enigmatic blondes began to take centre stage. To pay homage to this fact, slip into a flared dress that cinches in at your waist – very fifties, very fitting.

The main point to remember, when heading down the Hitchcock fashion route, is that sleek and stylish are keywords. If the prom dress styles of Grace Kelly in Rear Window, or tailored tones of Tipi Hedren in The Birds, aren’t for you then pick up an elegantly cut playsuit for a head-turning nod to sophisticated style.
Alternatively, opt for the modern favourite of a shift dress. We love the options available in our Designers at Debenhams ranges, with the shift dress guaranteed to look right at home on the curves of Vertigo’s Kim Novak.
As ever, accessories are vital and a fashionista’s best friend. Add leather gloves or a seductive floppy felt hat (try peeking out with one eye from underneath it and you’ll see what we mean…) and a simple outfit can become instantly stunning – just like that.
When it comes to bags and shoes, less is more for the Hitchcock vibe with natural, plain options the perfect way to work it. ‘Hitchcock’s blondes’ were effortlessly stunning – no fuss, is definitely a must. Oh my though, it has to be said… with such a stylish range to choose from, we’re feeling somewhat giddy with anticipation.
One might even say we’re showing signs of Vertigo…
