As she releases her new blues album, we sit down with new mum Rebecca Ferguson to find out what she’s been up to, her style secrets and what’s in store for the future.
Rebecca performed live at Debenhams Oxford Street on March 11 2015. See all the photographs from the night below.
Congratulations on your new album ‘Lady Sings the Blues’. What was the inspiration behind doing a Billie Holiday covers album?
Aw thank you! I’ve always been aware of Billie Holiday and her role in the blues world but it was only when somebody suggested I do this sort of album and how perfect my voice would be for it that I really delved into her dark history. She is a huge inspiration in how she dealt with her struggles and still managed to create incredible music. She was a great lady troubled but who sang from her soul.
Have you found it difficult balancing being a new mum with the new album launch?
It is a juggling act but like every working mother it’s all about balance. At the minute I am balancing it well and my daughter comes everywhere with me so I feel lucky to be able to do that.
We’ve been writing about what our mothers have taught us in time for Mother’s Day. What has your mother taught you?
My mother is a humble, kind woman who has taught me faith and strength and also to be kind. She is an inspiration to me as she has overcome a lot in her life and she is the least materialistic person I know. She’s a great woman.
How would you describe your style in three words?
Glamorous, cool but comfortable.
Who’s your style icon and where do you look for style inspiration?
I love Audrey Hepburn and Olivia Palermo. For style inspiration, normally shopping and trying things on but also magazines – love a good read of a fashion mag!
Do you feel your style has changed since the X-Factor?
My fashion changes according to what I like. I don’t follow trends and I tend to wear what I like. If I see something I like, I wear it no matter what style it is in but I always revert back to classic glamour. I do like girly clothes but believe in dressing in whatever makes you feel comfortable and individual.
Did you enjoy your recent personal shopping experience at Debenhams?
Yes – who doesn’t love being pampered and dressed by a personal shopper! I loved it and the afternoon tea was a beautiful touch.
You chose to wear a Jenny Packham dress (bronze sequin dress in image below) for your live performance at Debenhams Oxford Street. Why did you choose this particular dress and how does it make you feel?
I think it’s just a gorgeous dress. When performing, I like to feel my best and love dressing up for a big show – Jenny Packham is perfect for this.
Which is your favourite piece from the Jenny Packham collection?
I love all of them but I would have to say one of my favourites is the new full length embellished champagne gown (see below image), it is truly stunning. I would love to wear it when performing at a black-tie gala ball. I wish I had had that dress for when I performed in front of Prince William last week!
Where do you think would be the perfect occasion to wear these Jenny Packham dresses?
I think the most perfect occasion (other than your own wedding!) to wear these dresses would need to be somewhere where you’re able to really show them off!
Do you know what you’ll be wearing for your upcoming performance at the St James Theatre?
It’s a surprise! But it will be high glamour.
What’s been your stand-out fashion moment?
I dressed myself for the Brits a few years ago and it was all a bit last minute. I got best dressed that year and I was quite proud that I managed to pull it all off in a rush.
Where do you shop for your children’s clothes?
I tend to buy online – I shop everywhere and anywhere to be honest. I like Spanish style clothes on my children but I also pick bits up from my local supermarket for them to play in. They grow out of them so quick I don’t like to spend too much money on them.
What’s next for you after this album?
Well I’ve just signed another 2-album deal with RCA so I will be focusing on new music and I will also be performing at several festivals including Love Supreme Jazz Festival on 4th July where Chakha Khan is also performing – I can’t wait for that! And just enjoying some time off to go on holiday!
