New season trend alert: Town & Country

Inspired by the country, designed for the fashion loving girl-about-town. Discover your inner rustic goddess in textured fabrics and earthy tones, as we showcase one of the season’s hot new trends; Town & Country.

To perfect this gorgeous autumn look, think more modern-day Downton, less Lady Chatterley. If the Downton cast were roaming the Yorkshire fields today, downstairs would do causal chic in checked shirt and jeans, Sybil would sneak off with the chauffeur in a tweed mini and Mary, when participating in the hunt, would look elegant in chinos and a quilted jacket.

Loving the sound of the trend so far? Read on to see how you can work the look with a few key pieces from the fabulous ranges at Debenhams – provided we don’t snap them all up first…

Red Herring, H! by Henry Holland and Butterfly by Matthew Williamson are just a few of our brands that are definitely headed out of the town this season and taking their style all the way to the country. Faux gilets, quilted coats, tweed jackets and duffle coats each give a nod to the trend – the only issue is figuring out what to buy first.

Known for his quirky slogan tees, at Debenhams Henry Holland is also known for his love of animals, clearly a source of inspiration for the AW12 season and ideal for adopting into the Town & Country trend.

Checks, too, are big on the Town & Country fashion radar, with H! by Henry Holland making us, and styling us, fashion happy here too. Come to think of it, why are we surprised? We can just imagine Henry Holland himself rocking up in a modern day Downton – gilet on, cap in hand. Looking good Henry…

Every fashionista knows that the accessories she chooses can make or break her outfit. The trick with accessories is to know when to maximise their potential and to understand when they should merely complement your look.

When it comes to Town & Country style, it’s all about selecting the right colours, tones and fabrics. Shoes and boots should be neutral tones such as tan or dark brown, jewellery should preferably be gold and, when it comes to hats and scarves, opt for checked bits and pieces if your outfit is predominantly smooth, dark, plain earthy tones and vice versa.

To ensure you have the Town & Country look ‘in the bag’ this autumn, then an on-trend bag is the way to do it – go figure. Red Herring pull the trend out the bag (sorry, couldn’t resist) in this department too, while J by Jasper Conran shows us how to work the style while looking pretty in pink.

Hot pink and tweed? That really is a mixture of down-town glamour combined with country chic.
