Everyon’e talking about Fashion Weeks right now and we’ve got our insider to give us all the gossip and trends from the shows and front row. Here’s her New York diary…
Arrive at JFK airport working a kind of sort of dishevelled grunge chic gone wrong. The dishevelled thing is a really hard look to pull off by the way, who knew this look would cost so much? I’m practically sponsored by touché éclat quite frankly as for my hair; I don’t think I could physically get more dry shampoo in it (or highlights). Thank god for oversized shades and fabulous handbags, they are the only things differentiating me from somebody who sleeps rough on a park bench right now.
Discovered the hotel I’m staying at on a fashion blog last week, things move so quickly in this city which probably means it’s more last week than this week. It does have a kind of disco in the reception vibe as for the pool on the roof, well I just cant wait to get out my Julian cheetah bikini, I won’t have the time of course, there is never anytime during fashion week for relaxation or partying, it’s all go go go, not that I mind. The walk in wardrobe in my room is the size of my flat back in London; this is a good thing considering the amount of things I’ve brought with me. It’s not my fault I love everything in the shops right now, all those power shoulders, mini skirts and over the knee boots are stuff of fashion dreams! As for biker boots, well they just take up so much room in my suitcase so could only bring two pairs!
My first show of the week is Preen, Thea and Justin are the ultimate Brits abroad considering most Brit designers came home to celebrate 25 years of London Fashion Week. The husband and wife duo love to buck a trend. I get why they show here, this collection is all slick New York City woman with an edge, but I can’t imagine many English roses in the colour taupe that’s for sure. The A list Hollywood set love this collection and I can totally imagine them working the black dress with lace inlays. Later on, Erin Wasson, the queen of low-key style is shows uptown in the tents. Erin’s got the cool crowd eating out of her perfect little hands since she collaborated with RVCA three seasons ago but can we just talk about this short short thing for a moment? Do we think it’s fair for a super model to design a collection that includes short shorts?! The most expensive thing I’m going to be investing in next season is a personal trainer at this rate. Love the ‘Keep It Neil’ t-shirt, I’m probably 500th on the waiting list though.
There are so many parties during fashion week that a gal really has to be choosy, well actually I should be in my hotel room blogging but what the hell, my editor is back in London and as long as I file on time. I’m at a dinner party hosted at the Standard Hotel’s aptly named Boom Boom Room and am wondering if I need one of these at home. ‘Dinner’ is kind of sparse and I think I may have only seen an asparagus on a skewer so far this evening, I didn’t get the memo about the no carbs rule this season, not that I would dare to ask for bread in front of these size zero’s. There are white leather banquettes, plush carpets, and a killer dance floor and I’m wearing a body con dress and plan to use it regardless of having a 10.00 am Lacoste show!
There’s a lot of statement jewellery going on in the front row here. Huge necklaces sit on elegant evening dresses, which is the new day dress by the way. The New York front row look is always elegant, these ladies know exactly how to work a manicure-pedicure-blow-dry like their life depended on it, it probably does, doubt they would even be allowed in the office if they weren’t fully ‘done’. Us Brits aren’t good at that front row power dressing, we’re more about the print shift dress, shrunken leather jacket and a cute biker boot much to our American sisters chagrin. At least we haven’t had a knee lift, oh yes, a knee lift, they were everywhere! Ladies please, there is nothing less attractive than a forty year old woman with the legs of a small child.
There’s such an American sports grunge chic thing going on over at Alexander Wang. There were grey marl jogging trousers worn with heels and cut out football socks, there was even a bag made out of an American football – we can make this at home! Wang really is the fashion kid of the moment. The super models looked amazing with hair in thick side plaits. This preppy American thing is definitely a trend, even uber Editor Carine Roitfeld has ditched her Goth look for simple blue shirts and smart cream skirts; tres Ralph Lauren in the 90s. Speaking of the granddaddy of American fashion, Ralph showed (stop the press) ripped skinny jeans alongside his usual ultra elegant eveningwear selection. The dark blue tailored suiting was the most exquisite thing I saw all week, well discounting the crazy yet beautiful homage to Japanese layering thing that was going on over at Marc Jacobs.
So what are the new dress up rules for next Spring so far? There are cut-outs on dresses, there are sequins and lots of transparency. There’s a multicoloured safari tribal thing going on too. There are ankle boots and shoe boots in bright colours. Nude jersey dresses for daytime. There’s a clashing of techno prints and sequins are literally everywhere – but for day worn with khaki trousers or a parka. I’m also loving the shorts but really short shorts thing. Oh and it’s all about dresses. No grunge, no punk, no Goth and lots and lots of flat shoes. Confused? Well I’ve got so many trends jumping off my jotter I barely know what to write about! I’m looking forward to London Fashion Week, can’t wait to see what the designers have planned for the 25th anniversary. Can’t wait to tell you all about it too.
