He cycles faster than most of us drive and his winning mentality is the envy of the peloton.
Professional cyclist Mark Cavendish, of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, is – without doubt – the leading road sprinter of his, or indeed any other, generation.
His blistering acceleration and ability to sustain top speed over more than 200 metres has seen Cavendish claim 23 Tour de France stages victories – the fourth highest of any rider.
And with the 2013 Tour Grand Depart on 29 June, he’ll surely add to that tally before reaching Paris on 21 July.
The reasons for his breathtaking ability are varied and they range from his raw physical form the the size of Matt Goss’s bottom – Cavendish once said that the reason he won so many sprints was because the “rear end” of his former teammate punched such a large hole in the air in front of him. True story.
But enough of this frivolity. It’s also down to his kit.
By that I mean a stunning, lightweight bike, top-of-the-range clothing and helmet and his sunglasses aren’t too shabby either.
Think about it, roaring down the Champs-Elysees on the final lap of the final stage of Le Tour and *BAM* monsieur fly gets stuck in your eye. It’s game over.
But not if you’re wearing a pair of Oakley Radarlock sunglasses, there’s no such problem and the stage win is yours.
They include interchangeable lenses, both of which are curved, for protection and peripheral vision, and made with high definition optics for superior clarity. The frames are lightweight, stress resistant and made with cut out detailing for ventilation.
All-in-all, top gear for the top man. Good luck for Le Tour Mark!
