The cast and characters of Downton Abbey have become style icons as well as Emmy award winners this season. Fashion items made popular in Edwardian times are now making a comeback thanks to the return of the hit ITV series.
We were left scratching our heads over sales increases of up to 584% on items such as fur capes, pearls and elbow-length gloves. But it didn’t take long to work out that the sales peaks coincided with the launch of series two of Downton Abbey – now the most successful British period drama since Brideshead Revisited, attracting around 10million viewers an episode.
Aristocratic chic is back with elbow-length gloves and leather gloves seeing a hike in popularity. Sales of fur capes and sequin capelets are also proving a hit with our customers as well as jewelled hair bands and hair accessories. Plus, the best thing of all is that you can recreate the look with a few choice accessories that won’t cost a fortune. Good news for savvy spenders.
But as well as what you CAN see, what we’re wearing underneath seems to have been influenced by Downton Abbey’s ladies too. Waistnippers designed to create an hourglass shape and corsets have seen a sales increase of 71% since the start of the second series.
If you’ve got a fabulous little black dress in your wardrobe you can update it on a budget with these fabulous accessories – it’s one of our top tips for the festive party season which will be here before you know it.
