Todd Lynn vs the Royal Baby?
BY LIZZIE, WOMENSWEAR EDITOR ON 22 JUL 2013 12:02 DESIGNERS AT DEBENHAMSCOMMENTS
Today in the office we’re not sure what to be more excited about – the imminent arrival of the Royal Baby (in case you’ve thus far avoided all news channels and social media outlets, you should know that the Duchess of Cambridge went into labour at 6am this morning), or the fact that Debenhams has announced the latest addition to EDITION, London Fashion Week designer Todd Lynn.
Given we know heaps about the Todd Lynn/range – and very little as yet of the miniature addition to the monarchy – we’ll shout out about the latter first.
Born in Canada, Todd graduated from Central St. Martins with an MA, and spent much of his early career working with Roland Mouret. Since starting his own label in 2006, he soon attracted attention for his signature androgynous tailoring style.
A 12 piece collection comprising outerwear, knitwear and leather and denim separates, if you’re a fan of the man who has dressed Mick Jagger, Beyoncé and Janet Jackson, you’ll fall head over heels for Todd’s formidable style of über-cool, tailored pieces.
Launching in stores and online on 21 October 2013, starting at £55, the collection strikes a balance between luxury fabric and cut and beautiful investment pieces, yet priced for the high street.
Todd himself told us:
“The woman who wears my clothes is fearless, and wants to put a piece of clothing on and feel amazing. I feel like we have made a collection true to my identity.
“Working with the team at Debenhams I feel we have been able to convey my identity in a way that the customer will understand. We’ve put together the perfect capsule range, encompassing cool, luxurious winter essentials – the leather skirt, the beautiful wool winter coat, the soft leather jacket, the jeans, the dress.”
The Debenhams EDITION platform offers a more fluid designer concept where emerging Fashion Week talent is signed for a minimum of four seasons, with the aim being to identify the next generation of Designers at Debenhams.
As for the next generation of royalty, as I post this column we’re still waiting to hear if it’s a boy or a girl, prince or princess. After decades of the traditional institution being seen to be ‘out of touch’ with modern-day life, the young royals (such as Harry, Kate and William, pictured above) have ignited something of a resurgence in popularity for the monarchy – with the royal baby the icing on the cake.
Here at Debenhams we’re hoping it happens by lunchtime and, if so, it’ll be bubbles in the park (pink for a girl, of course). If not, we can always raise a glass to Todd Lynn/EDITION for Designers at Debenhams.
Welcome to Todd Lynn! And hurry up royal baby – we can’t wait to celebrate what is sure to be the ultimate life made fabulous…
