With all the stress of looming final deadlines and exams, thoughts of graduation have taken a back seat. However, now exams are finally over its time to start the search for the perfect graduation dress or outfit to mark the big occasion. There are so many questions to consider, so at Debenhams we’ve come up with a few tips and outfit suggestions to help you get started in your pursuit for graduation success!
Girls’ graduation dresses & outfits
Firstly decide what style or outfit you are aiming for. For girls who want to look classic and smart, pick a knee-length dress – a shift dress is ideal. If your graduation is in the summer, chances are you won’t need tights so slather on some body lotion for perfect pins.
You could also go for a blouse and skirt/trousers combination. It’s usually best to stick to plainer colours like black, grey, white or neutrals. If you really want to steal the fashion crown though, you could pair with bright coloured heels and clutch bag to give a burst of colour. Don’t forget to add some pretty jewellery to complete the look.
Sometimes a shirt or blouse can be a great choice as you’ll need to secure your robes to something. However, as long as you take plenty of safety pins along you should be fine. I’d also recommend taking some hair grips too so you can keep your mortar board secure. It’ll take away the worry of it falling off your head as you accept your qualification.
Make sure your outfit is comfortable, especially your shoes. You are going to be stood around for a long time and although those killer heels look fabulous the reality is that stilettos and grass or standing around don’t work well together. Instead opt for mid-heels which have a good supporting heel, this way you can stay sipping champagne until its gets dark.
Boys’ graduation outfits
Now on to the boys … opt for a suit or smart shirt and trousers. Although the boy who turns up in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts is always hilarious, formal is definitely the best way to go. Opt for a classic black or grey suit with a tie that won’t clash with your graduation colours.
Brands like Red Herring and Ben Sherman offer fashion suits which have a modern cut for a younger look. J by Jasper Conran or Jeff Banks are great investment buys but if you can take advantage of some great offers in our Blue Cross Sale (on for a limited time only).
For the more daring, go a little wild and sport a dashing bow tie, my personal favourite being the Red Herring aqua check bow tie. It’s sure to add a preppy coolness to your suit.
Extra graduation tips

- Think about the weather, have a jacket prepared just in case it’s not the sunny day you wished for and always have an umbrella to hand.
