An Ode to Miniskirts

As this season’s love affair with the 60s spurs on, we look to the miniskirt – pillar of Mod style and indisputable feminine power piece. And unlike the blazer, which we borrowed from the boys, the miniskirt is all our own.

It wasn’t too long ago that a short skirt hem was unacceptable, and we have precisely two individuals to thank for its creation and launch into society. Legendary French designer André Courrèges and the original Chelsea girl Mary Quant, who opened her famed shop Bazaar on Kings Road in the 60s and was an instrumental figure in the Mod fashion movement. It was in 1965 that she honed in on the symbol of liberation that was the mini-skirt, but apparently Quant says she didn’t invent it – that it was her customers – who wanted the skirts shorter, shorter and shorter still.

Unsurprising, as there’s something that feels instinctually right about wearing a miniskirt. Today, even though the now-staple doesn’t make the same rebellious statement, it’s still a piece we put on when we want to proudly own our feminine wiles. And it seems the international style set agree. We love the miniskirt looks of Blake Lively, Barbara Martelo (Vogue Spain – in white) Brit Alexa Chung and super-blogger New Yorker Leandra Medine.

“But what if I’m not confident about my legs?” I hear you ask. There is a solution to be found for all, in learning to experiment with skirt shapes, hem lengths and shoe styles to find a frame that best elongates your figure. Rest assured, there is a magic combo to suit everyone.

But when in doubt, remember that going for a looser (go up a size if needs be) A-line cut skirt with volume at the hem – and wearing simple high-heeled court shoes – is always slimming. Wedges and bodycon fits have the opposite effect.
