AW14 Trend: Pastel Palette

As this autumn/winter season leaves no style stone unturned, flamboyant souls who despair at the thought of trading in their summer wardrobe for the traditional autumn palette of blacks, browns et al, can rejoice – poetic pastels have finally been reinvented for cooler weather.

Thanks to catwalk heavyweights such as Céline, Rochas and Carven,  structured fuzzy coats, statement separates and accessories are abundant in sugary, ultra-feminine shades. What better way to  help soften the harsh winter months? Here are three ways to wear pastels now:

For a look that’s romantic and street-smart all at once, we pair this ladylike powder-blue zip jacket from Red Herring over these cool, heart-embellished boyfriend jeans by H! by Henry Holland (both coming soon). Pastel pink accessories in the form of  this elegant  feather-light scarf, cross-body bag, and smart court shoes from KG by Kurt Geiger enhance this charming palette. The epitome of smart casual, this outfit is perfect for casual dinners and weekend catch-ups.

If you normally gear towards darker colours, working in one pastel hue with black is a modern way to embrace this trend and retain a bit of toughness. Warehouse’s cool baby blue jumper features a black lace overlay, managing to pull off this feat within itself, but makes the perfect contrast statement paired with a leather effect A-line skirt.  Carvela’s pretty pale blue trainers complement the jumper perfectly, while  Oasis’s black leather-effect rucksack is a fresh take on the classic accessory. A bolder shade of blue nail polish, such as OPI’s Can’t Find My Czechbook, is the perfect finishing touch to this fashion-forward ensemble.

We contrast eye-catching tone-on-tone pink with accessories in a calm, neutral palette for this bold yet sophisticated look. Butterfly by Matthew Willaimson’s pretty pink cocoon coat (coming soon) creates the perfect dramatic silhouette over straight-leg coral pink trousers, while a cream coloured top offsets the bright colour well. Paring it all down, Ravel’s snake effect suede ankle boots and this smart, elegant cream tote keeps the look from getting too cutes-y.

The great thing about a pastel palette for autumn is that you can wear as much or as little as you like, tweaking according to your personal taste. Whether you opt for a literal sundae of candy-coloured hues in head-to-toe pastel, or wear just one shade with black,  you can embrace the season’s sweetest trend.
