Do the hustle!

Although we tend to lump the 60s and the 70s together, the latter was powerfully more free-wheeling. Here’s why the über-glam style of the decade is having a renaissance now and how to work the look.

The Seventies spun off as a reaction against the all-too-girly look of the Sixties. Because of the drastic changes that took place in politics – and the invention the Pill – ladies truly began to own their newly liberated status. And fashion, of course, reflected the movement in the form of plunging necklines, dramatic flared trousers and long silhouettes cut from flowing textiles that you were surely not to miss. Design houses Yves Saint Laurent and Halston bolstered the aesthetic to high-fashion status, and women everywhere were going out, and made sure not to go unnoticed. For inspiration, Michelle Pfeiffer as the troubled Elvira in Scarface (bottom right) is the perfect muse.

Circa now, a refined take on 70s style has trickling in this winter for a big comeback this spring/summer if the catwalks of Derek Lam, DVF and Phillip Lim are anything to go by. (They are.) Championing the look are Georgia May Jagger (unsurprising, as her mother Jerry Hall was a key figure on the scene), Kendall Jenner and haute-hippie queen Rachel Zoe.

Seventies make-up was bold and super glam: think winged eyeliner, smoky eyes, blue eye shadow and a highly saturated lip colour. For a modern approach, we say work only a bold lip or a bold eye for (paradoxically) bigger impact. Hair was big too, hinting at a feminine regality. Here are some of our favourite pieces and products to help you achieve modern 70s style…
