It’s ancient history…

Once upon a time, there was the Byzantine Empire, the Baroque period, the Rococo movement and the Victorian era. Admittedly, our history knowledge sometimes obscures these periods, but one’s thing’s for sure – the past is anything but passé when it comes to fashion.

Although designers employing historical references is nothing new, many of the collections the past few seasons have relied heavily on modern versions of archaic, regal looks. Sicilians Dolce & Gabbana and Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen in particular have embraced the aesthetic from season to season. And as festive party season approaches and more opulent looks are sought, we’re increasingly keen to work this powerful look.

From gold, lace and embellishment to bejewelled headbands and accessories, cape-like coats, corsets, and statement jewellery, we’re loving the high-octane glamour of historically inspired fashion.

When it comes to styling this look, it’s one of the few occasions where more is literally more. Don’t be afraid to do a full eye or a smoky lip and go bold from head-to-toe.
