Lady in Red

Forget about fashion. Red, sophisticated yet brazen, eternal symbol of love and power, is always de rigueur for those very special occasions.

Everyone has a power dress. The one dress you go to for all those challenging moments when you feel you need some armour. Mine – and I would wager many women’s – is red. A scarlet red, short-sleeved sheath with a foldover hem. I’ve worn it to fashion week, job interviews (with a blazer), as well as an important romantic meeting or two. It always makes me feel invincible.

Like the lyrics in Chris de Burgh’s famous song Lady in Red (written about when he first saw his future wife) “I’ve never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance..”, red is a colour that is scientifically proven to attract the brawnier sex, as well as a hue synonymous with strength, energy and war. No wonder that (perhaps apart from gold) red makes the most impact. It was something Sophia Loren, enduring sex symbol, as well as global trendsetters, such as Rhianna, Alexa Chung, and Miranda Kerr know well.

Classic  make-up is mandatory with a red dress. It makes a big statement on its own, so your beauty look should be tame to counter its effects. First, ensure skin tone is flawless with a good foundation and concealer to even out imperfections. Then all you need is mascara, red nails, and lastly a red lip or black eyeliner.

Romantic red is also a bit like wearing your heart on your sleeve – perfect for this time of year as your friends and loved ones feel extra fuzzy by default (we hope). In any case, you’ll have your armour.
