SAG Awards: Best Dressed

The Screen Actor’s Guild Awards honours the outstanding film and television performances of the year and last night it played host to the most stylish stars in the business. The place that actors go to hang out with actors, it’s one exclusive club – and everyone dressed for the occasion.

The insider event showcases the most fashion-forward outfits, with many of the stars experimenting with their sartorial choices. This year there were plenty of unexpected choices; from Jennifer Aniston ditching black in favour of gold to Julianna Margulies opting for a daring cobalt gown.

The award winners of the night included GQ’s Best Dressed Man Eddie Redmayne, Julianne Moore and the cast of Birdman, but here’s who we think won in the style stakes…

Fifty Shades of Blue

Nominated for outstanding performance for her role in The Good Wife, Julianna Margulies may not have claimed the award, but she certainly won in our eyes. Wearing a Giambattista Valli cobalt blue gown with strappy sandals, she made a bold statement on the red carpet. Blue was popular with the rest of the crowd too, with Luciana Duval also coveting the bright hue. Several others, including Naomi Watts, Lauren Lapkus and Stephanie Beatriz, opted for a range of hues from darkest navy to tantalising teal.

Blank Canvas

While we may love a show-stopper, a classic, simplistic gown can be just as stunning. Reese epitomised chic in a sleek white Giorgio Armani gown styled with a simple ponytail, conjuring up a look that echoed pure elegance. Other celebrities that opted for the minimalist look included Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ariel Winter. Teamed with dazzling jewels and glowing skin, they proved how easy it is to be whiter than white in the style stakes.

Smouldering Gold

Opting for gold instead of her usual black, Jennifer Aniston looked smoking hot in a vintage Galliano number. Proving why she was once voted ‘Sexiest Woman of All Time’, the 45 year-old smouldered in the plunging design. Despite not taking home the gold, we think Jen ranked high for style. The precious metal made its way onto the red carpet in a few ways; Jackie Cruz swapped her prison uniform for a glitzy sleeved option, while Maria Menounos shimmered in a metallic strapless design.

Unique and Colourful

As is the case with most shows, the SAG’s hold a tradition where last year’s winners always return to ‘pass the baton on’, so to speak. Last year’s red carpet darling, and multiple award winner, Lupita Nyong’o showed that she’s still a fashion force to be reckoned with, merging colour and print to spectacular effect. The actress stood out in her printed Elie Saab gown, while several others opted for bright colours too, with jewel inspired shades proving the most popular. Julianne Moore looked gorgeous in an emerald green Givenchy gown that perfectly complemented her red hair, while Sophia Bush oozed glamour in a Vivienne Westwood rust orange ensemble.
