I really hope you can help us. My sister's wedding is in 3 weeks' time. Her future-mother-in-law volunteered to make the bridesmaid dresses. I was set against this from the start since this lady has never before made anything like this before, the only tailoring she does is taking in a seem or refitting a button. Recently she started to make simple dresses for my sister but it looks like your Walmart stuff.

Needless to say the dresses is a disaster. We are five bridesmaids and all of us are short and a bit on the chubby side. The style my sister insisted on is a short punk-rock dress that comes to our knees. The lady was supposed to make it in an Empire Waist style but instead, to fit with the top op my sister's wedding dress she made it in a princess style that flows out for our chests, with a net underskirt.

This last Sunday all of us went for our final fittings and we look absolutely horrible! Since I am the maid of Honor my dress is a gunmetal gray and silver pattern. Our boobs and shoulders look enormous. The other bridesmaids' dresses are a soft apricot pink and to be honest they look like pink cupcakes. I did not even look in the mirror but my mother was with us for the fitting and she agrees that all of does not look good. The style absolutely accentuates all the worst parts of our bodies. My sister does not want to offend her future mother-in-law and allow us to take the dresses to someone else. The lady gives music lessons to a lot of school children and the exams are coming up now in March so she doesn't have time in any case to fix it now. We suggested that maybe she could add a wide black belt so that our waists are at least more defined but because of the way the dress is made the material bunches up and it looks bad. My sister refuses that we ask her to take the waist of the dress down a bit so that is flows out from our middles and makes it more defined, and says it will be too much work this close to the wedding and her future mother-in-law does not have the time to do this now.

The only other option I can think of is to get a stylish jacket to wear with my dress to at least take the attention off my boobs and shoulders. The only good thing I can say is that at least the skirt hides our tummies, buttocks and thighs. I am just worried that with the princess style a jacket will make me look fatter than the dress already does. Do you have any advice on what type of jacket I can get that will be a bit more flattering?

P.S. I am from South Africa, March is the beginning of autumn here.

Hi Lindie, sorry to hear you are experiencing problems with your bridesmaid dress. As your dress has a full skirt and goes out just below the chest I suggest a plain cropped jacket or bolero in a neutral colour tone that will nip in the waist. Take a look at this cream shawl bolero which will go nicely with both grey and pink (////www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_54510+401672102_-1) or for a more structured style, try this jacket (////www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_54510+900745951_-1). Alternatively, you can see our whole collection of occasionwear cover ups here > ////www.debenhams.com/women/occasion-evening-wear/cover-ups. Hope that helps and you find a jacket you love.
