Style Icon: Audrey Hepburn

Ever since Audrey Hepburn picked up her Oscar wearing a Givenchy gown she has been regarded as one of the most stylish icons in fashion history. She went on to star in Breakfast at Tiffany’s wearing a little black dress, a flick of black eyeliner and a chic up-do, which is now a classic look admired by many generations.

In the 60s she was synonymous with style and natural beauty. Now the picture is not too different, she’s an icon famous for her elegant, effortless look. There are numerous infamous photographs and books about the star but one of our favourites has to be Bob Willoughby’s classic coffee table book. Full of iconic, exclusive photographs, we couldn’t be more excited that it’s been re-released this September.

The Audrey Hepburn book showcases an abundance of Willoughby’s work with Hepburn, including some of the most intimate shots of the actress with her children, exercising in the garden and even shopping with her pet fawn. To celebrate the re-release of the beautiful book we round up our favourite Audrey Hepburn looks and famous quotes.

Willoughby is said to have been the pioneer of photojournalism and has pointed his camera lens at numerous icons including Marylin Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. However, he said on many occasions that Hepburn remained his favourite. “She took my hand like…well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men’s hearts,” he recalls. As a testament to his photographs, they are held in permanent collections in the  National Portrait Gallery in London and Washington D.C., as well as a new exhibition which is on now until 4 October 2014 at the Beetles+Huxley gallery in London.

Throughout the book Audrey Hepburn’s style evolves from 50s pin-up to sophisticated 60s siren. The 60s influenced look is one of our favourite trends this season, so why not take inspiration from one of the most stylish icons from the era and embrace the little black dress?
