Summer Trend: Nautical

Nautical is probably one of the most wearable and chic trends of all time. The simple formula of blue, white and stripes is one we can all easily embrace, so it’s no wonder it’s taking the summer by storm once again this year.

Unlike most trends, nautical fashion is not new; Queen Victoria is credited with starting the fashion movement when she dressed four year old Prince Albert in a sailor suit in 1846. Then Coco Chanel showed the nautical look worked for fashionable women too. Soon, the sailor’s uniform became a wardrobe staple coveted by the most stylish ladies in fashion. With Cannes Film Festival drawing to a close and a new Riviera Style exhibition opening at The Fashion and Textiles Museum, the nautical trend is more relevant than ever.

On the Catwalk

The SS15 catwalks referenced all things maritime and the nautical trend had a new, modern feel. Many designers showcased the bold red, white and blue palette, giving the look a graphic, sporty aesthetic. The subtle nautical details were just as cool, knotted rope belts at Isabel Marant and denim sailor trousers at Sonia Rykiel offered a more subdued approach to the trend. Trusty Breton stripes proved a wearable option for night too, courtesy of Altuzarra’s ultra sexy striped pencil skirt and shirt combo. The nautical trend may be classic but the designers proved that with contemporary details and new styling, it’s just as current now as it’s always been.

How to wear it

The deep-sea trend can be worn day to night as it’s versatile and wearable. Take inspiration from the modern-day nautical icon, Kate Middleton, by opting for hues of navy, white and pops of red for an effortless way to embrace the trend. Give the look an update with this season’s must-have sailor trousers and don’t forget to accessorise with a chic floppy hat, rope details and gold finishes.

With the nautical trend nailed, all you need now is a sun-kissed glow and a yacht, so you can set sail in style…
