The grandest 60s revival yet

The defined silhouettes and freewheeling aesthetic of the 60s are back again with a vengeance, yet never have we had such elegant, modern interpretations.

With so many style icons defining the era, everyone from Twiggy, Jane Birkin and Jean Shrimpton, to Patti Boyd, Brigitte Bardot and Julie Christie era’s – all polished, self-possessed, yet more than a little bit wild, it’s no wonder the 60s are being regularly re-interpreted.

This season has taken the best of the era – well-cut mini-skirts, fluid A-line dresses, sleek mid-heel boots, pointed toes, and pops of colour, and eschewed some of the more questionable trends, such as seizure-inducing psychedelic prints. The influence was seen everywhere from New York to Milan’s runways for AW14, most notably at Delpozo, Saint Laurent, Gucci and Valentino, who showed stunning fit and flare shifts with beautiful embellishment.

There’s a fresh wave of overdue 60s inspiration on the telly that we are loving. BAFTA-winning actress Sheridan Smith (above) plays a young, determined, feisty Cilla Black in ITV’s biopic Cilla. The real Cilla (a legendary music and British TV icon for those of you unawares) was a stylish fixture during 60s London. The three-part ITV drama chronicles her rise to stardom and hard work she had to employ to make her way into a male-dominated music industry at the time. Naturally, the wardrobe is fab. Real-life Cilla was/is good pals with Barbara Hulanicki – founder of iconic 60s brand Biba. Catch the series’ second and third parts on the September 22 and 29 on ITV at 9pm.

Working in the strong hair and makeup trends from the period is fundamental – even if it’s just a little bit of extra volume at the crown, a flip at the hair’s end, and a little cat-eye with liquid liner. Sienna Miller in Alfie is the perfect inspiration for this seductive beauty look.
