The Oscars: Red Carpet Style

Tinseltown’s finest descended on the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles last night to celebrate the biggest event in the Hollywood calendar, the Oscars. Known for offering the crème de la crème of red carpet glamour, the awards did not disappoint as the stars navigated the rain-soaked red carpet in an array of stunning designer gowns. But what were the biggest dress trends on the night?

Black & White

The biggest trend of this year’s red carpet was, without a doubt, black and white. And while a monochrome colour palette may seem like a boring choice, the stars jazzed it up with show-stopping embellishments and attention-grabbing silhouettes. There was a move away from the plunging necklines we have seen of late as more demure silhouettes, particularly off-the –shoulder and bandeau styles, won the awards for most favoured shape.

Statement earrings – highlighted as a key trend at the Grammy Awards – remained the red carpet accessory of choice for many stars. Hair was swept back to give the dazzling pieces their time to shine in the limelight.

Julianne Moore dressed up her lips with a deep berry shade that added a dramatic and glamorous finish to her sophisticated black and white ensemble. If you like this deep berry shade, try Bobbi Brown in Hot Berry.

Reese Witherspoon opted for a gorgeous natural tan look that was sexy, radiant and effortless. To achieve Reese’s golden complexion use St Tropez Tan Face and Body Lotion.

Marion Cotillard took a classic approach with her make up. The focus was mainly on her eyes with dramatic eyeliner and volumising mascara followed by a touch of bronzer to the apples of the cheeks and a sophisticated nude lip.

Reds & Pinks

It wasn’t all black and white on the night as some stars injected a dash of colour to the red carpet, notably statement reds and blush pinks. Despite dividing opinions with her latest red carpet looks, there’s no denying that Rosamund Pike looked a vision in red wearing a figure-hugging, off-the-shoulder lace gown with front thigh split. Fifty shades of Grey star, Dakota Johnson, also opted for scarlet, showing off her sexier side in a Saint Laurent gown accessorised with sparkling diamonds. Gwyneth Paltrow, on the other hand, looked pretty in pink in a one-sleeved Ralph & Russo number complete with statement jeweled earrings.

Beauty Editor’s Tips

According to Rosamund Pike’s make up artist she created a look that is chic, modern and balanced with an overall sense of beauty. To achieve this effortless look focus on your skincare. Prep the skin using Sisley’s Botanical Floral Toning Lotion and Botanical Floral Spray Mist.

To complement Gwyneth Paltrow’s super-sleek straight hair, her make up was simple yet effective with a touch of green eyeshadow and a shimmery pink lip.

Dakota Johnson looked beautiful with her luminous complexion, soft smoked eyes and a bold red lip.
