The Rise of the Short Wedding Dress

Brides-to-be are going to whole new lengths when it comes to their wedding style, jilting the traditional full length wedding gown and falling in love with shorter styles.

It’s difficult not to notice the dramatic rise in those saying “I do” to the shorter hemline as highlighted by the recent influx of celebrities choosing shorter wedding dresses for their big day. At her low-key wedding to Klaxons star, James Righton, Keira Knightley chose a simple strapless dress with a full tulle skirt paired with a tweed jacket and ballet pumps, while Olivia Palermo – who’s known for her impeccable fashion sense – also opted for a shorter style on her big day.

Although short wedding dresses have grown in popularity of late, they are not a recent phenomenon. The eternally chic Audrey Hepburn opted for a short wedding dress at not one, but two of her weddings, while Yoko Ono also opted for a white mini dress when she tied the knot with John Lennon in 1969.

So what are the benefits of wearing a shorter style? Whether you feel your legs are your best asset and you want to show them off, you’re getting wed on an exotic beach and need to stay cool, or you simply want a dress that allows greater movement and comfort, short wedding dresses are worth considering for so many reasons. Some may argue that shorter wedding dresses don’t look as elegant as more traditional styles but they can offer just as much sophistication, with breathtaking silhouettes and the same level of exquisite detailing.  If you need to cover up more during the day (at a church ceremony for example), one option is to do a Poppy Delevingne by wearing a longer wedding gown during the day before changing into a shorter wedding dress for the evening – perfect for those who want to dance the night away.
