Monthly Musings: May

From must-sees to must-buys, here’s our list of everything you need to do, wear and see this May…

May Bank Holidays

Welcome the coming of spring and new life with this weekend’s May Day bank holiday and then look forward to another relaxing three day weekend with the Spring bank holiday which takes place at the end of the month.

On May 2nd & 30th.

Princess Charlotte’s Birthday

The mini royal will soon celebrate her 1st birthday, no doubt with a little help blowing out her candles by elder brother George, who turns 3 in July. The special birthday falls in at a busy time following the princess’s parents’ recent trip to India and her great grandmother, HM the Queen celebrating her 90th birthday. We can’t wait to see pictures from the royal family photo album.

On May 2nd.

The Met Gala

The annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, held in New York City is back for another year. The glamorous occasion’s theme for this year is “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”, which will focus on the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion. So with this theme setting the tone for the formal dress of the night, we can’t wait to see the A-list guests’ attire on the red carpet.

On May 2nd.

Rooftop Film Club

The infamous Rooftop Film Club will return for another summer of new releases and cherished classics this month. The initial film selection to kick start the season will include: Blade Runner and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, alongside recent releases The Big Short, Creed and The Danish Girl. Found on the 8th floor of a multi- storey car park in Stratford, as well as the Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch, the Bussey Building in Peckham Rye, and The Roof Gardens in Kensington, this unique alfresco experience also hosts a variety of food and refreshments, so make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to watch movies under the stars.

Opens May 3rd.

London Craft Week

This unique festival will be celebrating its second birthday this year. Craftsmen across London will be descending upon famous galleries and specialist workshops to showcase both ancient skills and exciting new talent. Last year’s successful event featured jewellery, fashion, art and design, so don’t miss out on more exciting things to come at this year’s festival.

Starts May 3rd.

Cannes Film Festival

As one of the biggest dates in the international film calendar, there’s no competition in the red carpet glamour at the Cannes Film Festival. Spanning across a whirlwind 12 days, the prestigious occasion will be held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès and play host to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

From May 11th to 22nd.

Aladdin The Musical

After taking New York’s Broadway by storm, Disney’s hugely successful musical remake of the 1992 film will be hitting London’s West End this month. The leading roles of Aladdin and Jasmine have been given to British actor Dean John-Wilson, who previously auditioned on Britain’s Got Talent back in 2008 and Jade Ewen an ex-band member from the Sugababes. Prepare for flying carpets, lavish special effects, and plenty of sing-a-long songs on repeat!

Previews from May 27th.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

The annual grand floral display is back for its summer release but this year with added excitement; following the RHS patron, HM the Queen’s 90th birthday, there will be unique features including photographic exhibits and a floral arch to mark the special occasion. With over 100 years of practice and tradition in its favour, you can expect amazing plant displays as well as the best cutting-edge garden designs as the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea are transformed into the world’s greatest flower show.

Opens May 28th..
